Olomouc was for one weekend the capital of Naturefriends

Olomouc, Czechia - At the invitation of Czech members of the Naturefriends movement, a hundred of their colleagues from around the world arrived last weekend in Olomouc, a city in east Czechia. In the historic Moravian metropolis on the Morava River, the 22nd Congress of their umbrella organization, Naturefriends International (NFI) was held under the auspices of Mayor of the city. During the three days they spent together, there was time for discussions, knowledge exchange, evaluations and planning the future but also to experience the city in which almost everyone came for the first time.

On Friday, the mission of the social-environmental movement Friends of Nature, founded 1895 in Vienna, Austria, and its current issues were presented by a delegation led by President NFI Manfred Pils at the historic town hall to deputy mayor Ladislav Snevajs. This was followed by workshops with sharing experience and knowledge in Hotel Ibis where the participants were accommodated.

Saturday was dedicated to the 22nd session of the NFI Congress, the statutory meeting of representatives of national organizations of the Naturefriends movement. The Congress is held every three years, assesses the work of the organization and its elected representatives, its future plans and comments as well as current political issues that move the European Union. This Congress was held under the auspices of the Mayor of the city of Olomouc Antonín Stanek and the delegates acting in the hall of the Municipal Assembly were greeted by Deputy Mayor Mr. Snevajs and given a cordial welcome by Chairman of the local group of Naturefriends Mala Liska and President of the Czech organization Hynek Pecinka. After a day-long meeting ran in English, German and French, the participants dined at Saint Wenceslas Brewery.

Those who stayed until Sunday could attend a city walk through parks and the historic city centre prepared for their guests by the local Naturefriends. It received a very positive response and the Congress participants drove home with impressions of having met a new place that resembled “a smaller Prague without tourists”.

Naturefriends International (NFI) is the global umbrella organisation of the Naturefriends movement, uniting more than 45 member organisations with 500,000 members throughout the globe. NFI works for sustainable development in and beyond Europe focusing both on environment and society. NFI is a member of the Green 10, a group of leading environmental NGOs active at EU level. www.nf-int.org
